The Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) is looking for a technical leader with technical experience to develop and manage major research projects in its Generation Cyber Security area. In this role, you will provide support in the area of cyber security for non-nuclear bulk power generation.

The ideal candidate has technical depth in both generation plant instrumentation and control (I&C) systems and cyber security for integrated digital control systems, as well as strong project management and leadership skills.

Job Functions

  • Leads EPRI research efforts associated with power generation cyber security, working closely with other Institute Cyber Security technical experts. 
  • Supports research related to the NERC CIP standards and integration of cyber security into generation sector O&M practices.
  • Coordinates research efforts with other EPRI sectors and programs within the Generation Sector.
  • Monitors and/or participates in industry user forums, working groups and cyber security activities.
  • As needed, identifies the most qualified internal resources and/or contractor team to assist with tasks. Selects contractors, frames statements of work, and directs the work of the team to assure technical and financial milestones are met.
  • Applies cyber security and generation plant I&C technical knowledge to industry issues, acquires input on needs from members, and identifies current and emerging technical issues.
  • Maintains cyber security and generation plant I&C technical expertise. Maintains/participates in/establishes good national and international technical networks with manufacturers, consultants, academia, and research organizations.
  • Communicates cyber security strategies and results, written and verbal, to program membership and potential members through guidelines, reports, meetings, webcasts, workshops, and conferences. 
  • Provides assistance to the EPRI sales staff in Member and Technical Services and EPRI International.

Job Summary

  • Plans, designs, and controls the progress of complex project work within the technical department to meet member/client objectives; prepares and presents research reports.

  • Assumes responsibility for highly specialized technical objectives or problems where the relationships between cause and effect are difficult to establish and little or no precedence exists, and the use of creative imaginative thinking is required.

  • Influences project teams in the engineering aspects of the technical work.

  • Provides input into configuration management and documentation for engineer related projects.

  • Leads proposal efforts and new promotional work.

  • Maintains familiarity with the progress and problems in assigned technical areas.

  • Prepares proposals, technical publications, and delivers presentations.

  • Leads national and international technical networks with manufacturers, consultants, academia, and research organizations.

  • Works independently on technical activities without direct supervision

Education and Years of Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a technical field or equivalent experience required

  • 8-10 years of engineering experience or comparable work/educational experience.

  • Minimum of 5 years prior related experience in cyber security related to implementation of cyber security within generation plant I&C systems. Individuals with advanced degrees may qualify with fewer years of work experience.

The Ideal Candidate

  • Hands on engineering design, configuration, and maintenance experience with digital Distributed Control Systems, control system digital components, and integration.

  • Hands on cyber security implementation for both control system networks and digital components.

  • Experience working in a plant environment including operations, maintenance, and compliance issues.

  • Project management experience in engineering and maintenance.

  • Experience working in a project management or line management position with budget responsibility and accountability to plant management.

  • Work experience at an electric utility or related contractor preferred.

Technical Knowledge and Skills

  • Knowledge of control loop theory and control system design, configuration, and maintenance

  • Knowledge of the engineering design change process

  • Broad knowledge of cyber security theory and principles

  • Deep knowledge in one or more vertical areas in control systems and cyber

  • Knowledge of plant systems, operations, maintenance, and processes

  • Knowledge and awareness of control system vendors, and trends

  • Knowledge and awareness of cyber tools, devices, vendors, and trends

  • Understanding of NERC-CIP regulatory process and compliance

  • Advanced technical problem solving skills

  • Experience in engaging directly with electric utilities on cyber security projects that include power generation technology.
  • Experience with facilitation of the Cyber Security Capability and Maturity Model (C2M2)
  • Experience working with utilities to implement the NERC CIP standards, compliance objectives, and strategies. 
  • Experience applying common cyber security guidelines, such as the NIST 800 series and NISTIR 7628.
