The Cybersecurity Hardware Specialist is responsible for driving adequate hardware security designs into GM vehicle electronic control units (ECU). This role will focus on the hardware aspects of security designs protecting ECUs from being reverse engineered or compromised via direct hardware access. This person serves as the hardware expert for GM’s Product Cybersecurity organization. The Cybersecurity Hardware Specialist will lead in a progressive technical position responsible for supporting the definition and implementation of embedded security technology, requirements, and standards across the ECU product portfolio.
Major Duties / Responsibilities:
  • Define/maintain hardware security requirements for automotive embedded systems
  • Coordinate security requirement development with other cross-discipline activities
  • Analyze hardware feature requirements
  • Identify hardware specific vulnerabilities with PCB layouts and Microprocessor technologies
  • Lead hardware design reviews with suppliers and/or third parties to assess the security posture of embedded ECUs
  • Lead hardware implementation reviews with suppliers and/or third parties to assess the security posture of embedded ECUs
  • Collaborate with GM Tier 2 microcontroller suppliers to ensure medium term hardware security needs are readily available on the shelf for use by GM
  • Identify cybersecurity improvements to hardware at a competitive cost
  • Support the identification and resolution of product security hardware defects
  • Perform risk assessment of various ECU hardware designs
  • Remain knowledgeable of relevant hardware trends, technologies, and best practices for securing embedded control systems
  • Support continuous evaluation of security threats to drive changes that will increase the security posture of ECU hardware designs

Required Education:
  • Minimum of a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Computer Information Systems or equivalent

Required Skills/Experience:
  • Working knowledge of microcontrollers used across various embedded devices
  • Working knowledge of ECU hardware architectures used in the automotive space
  • Understanding of cryptography fundamentals
  • Demonstrated proficiency in requirements development
  • Knowledge of electronic hardware design and failure modes

Preferred Skills/Experience:
  • Knowledge of common automotive communication protocols (e.g., CAN, FlexRay, MOST, and Ethernet)
  • Knowledge of design and development aspects of automotive embedded systems
  • Knowledge of practices, designs and technologies used to secure embedded systems
  • Demonstrated proficiency in a wide range of security technologies and platforms
  • Knowledge and experience in control system hardware/software implementation, integration and testing
  • Knowledge of vehicle electrical systems
  • Ability to make decisions and recommendations while taking into account appropriate trade-offs between conflicting objectives
  • Ability to handle ambiguity and make decisions and recommendations with limited data
  • Strong interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to work with diverse/cross-functional teams
