The Network and Infrastructure Engineering (NIE) Division provides the technical communication and workplace infrastructure and services for the "desktop to teraflops" cyber workplace for the Laboratory as an institution. Within NIE, the Engineering and Security Services group designs the Laboratory’s classified and unclassified local area and core networks and manages the network security and compliance services.

The selected candidate will be the Chief Network Security Architect for NIE and a member of the Engineering and Security Services Group. Responsibilities of this position include:

  • Plan, research, and design robust security architecture for the LANL IT enterprise.
  • Build and oversee the implementation of network and computer security infrastructure.
  • Perform security assessments in collaboration with other security leaders.
  • Research security standards, security systems, and authentication protocols.
  • Plan for the future of the network and computer security infrastructure to meet the needs of a dynamic IT environment.
  • Evaluate new tools and techniques and propose innovative solutions to cyber security issues.
  • Lead diverse sets of technical individuals from various teams on laboratory scope initiatives.

What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Broad knowledge of and experience in the cyber security environment, including network and host system security issues and concepts, perimeter security controls, incident response, and cyber security operations.

  • Background in systems engineering, security engineering, architecting, and enterprise integration.

  • Knowledge of existing standards, frameworks, models, and methods for security architectures.

  • Knowledge of existing strategies, policies, laws, and regulations related to cyber security.

  • Understanding of existing and emerging technical and nontechnical cyber security standards.

  • Knowledge of

  • Risk assessment procedures, security policy formation, and compliance issues;

  • Security standards such as NIST SP 800-53, ISO 27001, ITIL, and COBIT

  • Expert knowledge and demonstrated application of advanced network security technologies and how to architect complex solutions.

  • Exposure to business planning, systems analysis, and application development.

  • Ability to collaborate well in a dynamic team environment.

Desired Skills:

  • Knowledge of the security and privacy aspects of cloud computing solutions.

  • Knowledge of emerging cyber security technologies.

  • Knowledge of messaging, service, and event-based infrastructures.

  • Experience modeling data, message, and service interoperability.

  • Understanding of technical, operational, and management issues related to design, development, and deployment of complex and distributed systems.

  • Understanding of interrelationships between critical infrastructure protection and cyber security.

  • Experience in or exposure to threat modeling.

Education:

A minimum of 15 to 20+ years of relevant IT experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Postgraduate coursework is expected.

Additional Details:

Clearance: Q(Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
