Qualifications We Require
You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:
- Earned bachelor's degree
- Currently attending and enrolled full time (or scheduled to graduate in the spring) in an accredited science, engineering, or math graduate program
- Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0
- Ability to work up to 40 hours per week during the summer
- U.S. citizenship
- Must be pursuing a master’s or PhD in Computer Science, Information Assurance, Computer or Electrical Engineering, Math, or a very closely-related field.
- Must have a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Assurance, Computer or Electrical Engineering, Math, or a very closely-related field.
- Expertise in one or more of the following: cyber vulnerability assessment, intrusion detection systems and countermeasures, network protocols and monitoring, host forensics and memory forensics, malware analysis and triage, Android OS and mobile security, cloud security, network traffic analysis, and emulation of large-scale computer networks.
- Software development competence in multiple programming languages; e.g. C/C++, Perl, Python, Ruby, Java, PHP, SQL, and MATLAB or a related language.
- Working knowledge of the Linux operating system.

About Our Team
The Enterprise Cyber Security Department is housed in the Information Security Sciences group. The group focuses on four major areas of research and development: (1) cyber vulnerability analyses and system assessments, (2) at-scale cyber system emulation, (3) data analytics and (4) cyber enterprise protection. This allows the group to focus on the intersection of vulnerability research, modeling and simulation, data analysis, and operations all in the context of cyber.Department 8965 combines cyber security research and operations to solve critical national security problems. We have operational responsibility within the corporate Cyber Enterprise Security team, and also support efforts to improve cyber security and information operations programs within Sandia and across the federal government. Staff members in the department have expertise in computer science and engineering, information assurance, cyber operations and related fields. Our core technical capabilities include cyber incident response, intrusion detection, network monitoring, network and host forensics, malware research and analysis, vulnerability assessments, and reverse engineering. We maintain state-of-the-art expertise in these disciplines as they continue to evolve, and conduct research to automate and advance tools and techniques, with the objective of enabling precious subject-matter-expert time to be spent on the most unique, difficult and dangerous elements of the threat space. With a history of applying research to solve real world problems, we address issues of trust and information assurance as they relate to national security. In addition, we are actively engaged in cyber educational programs that prepare students to enter the workforce and provide a recruiting pipeline for the Sandia cyber mission area.

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy (DOE)-granted security clearance.

What Your Job Will Be Like
The Center for Cyber Defenders (CCD) gives interns practical experience with computer systems, network operations, and information protection. The CCD program is focused on developing the next generation of experts in the field of computer security from the software stack down to embedded hardware. Our program combines research with education and provides a venue to foster students’ abilities to address the serious and unique challenges existing in the realm of cyber security research, and encourages the exploration of original ideas necessary to keep pace with the rapid changes in information technology and the increasing sophistication of cyber threats.
CCD is an internship program for graduate, undergraduate built around three core ideas:
1) Work on real-world cyber security problems that Sandia faces.
2) Train the next generation of security experts by working closely with Sandia's highly-trained full-time staff.
3) Form a lasting community of security researchers and policymakers.
CCD Interns are involved in various aspects of cyber security research, including conducting science-based cyber security research and developing new security tools. Interns will typically work on projects in two teams of two to four interns each over their 10-week internship. Projects are chosen based on student skill set and interest. Graduate students, as well as returning veterans of the program, will be expected to take a leading role on their project(s) and to contribute to the mentoring process.
Interns will work on projects in the areas of Intrusion Detection and Incident Response, Vulnerability Assessment, Malware Analysis, Emulytics and Big Data Analysis, Network Traffic Analysis, cloud security, Internet of Things security and more.
